Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about RNIDS

Most Frequently Asked User Questions + Answers

Who is my accredited registrar and how to contact them?

You can find out who the accredited registrar for the domain you registered is by visiting the domain name search (WHOIS) at: https://prod.rnids.beeloc.rs/whois.

The search results will show which registrar is responsible for the requested domain, and on the page List of Accredited Registrars you can find the contact details of the registrar.

The Serbian Business Registry (APR) directed us to you to obtain a domain certificate for media registration. How can we do that?

You can download the certificate from our website. Visit the WHOIS search (domain name search), enter the domain name for which you need the certificate, and the option “Download .pdf” will appear. Click it, save the document on your device, and your certificate is ready.

We received an email that our domain is expiring. Do we renew it with you?

RNIDS sends system messages reminding you to renew your domain on time. The email you received from us also contains the name of your accredited registrar. You need to contact your registrar to renew the domain registration, because RNIDS cannot do this for you—your current accredited registrar handles the renewal.

How can I verify or change the data for my domain?

The domain data (registrant’s name / company name, address, email, phone) can be changed upon request through your accredited registrar (AR).

To change the data:

  1. Contact your AR with a request.
  2. The AR verifies the registrant (usually via email or official document).
  3. The AR updates the data in the RNIDS system for the requested domain.

If the AR initiates a “data verification” process, i.e., confirmation of the registrant’s data accuracy, you need to cooperate with the AR because RNIDS requires that all data be correct, valid, and verifiable.

How and with whom should I renew my domain registration?

Domain registration renewal is done exclusively through your current accredited registrar (AR). You need to contact them to renew your domain. Renewal cannot be done directly through RNIDS.

If you don’t know who your AR is, visit rnids.rs/whois, enter your domain name, and the search results will show the company where your domain is registered.

Frequently Asked Questions about the RNIDS Foundation

What is RNIDS and why was it founded?

RNIDS is a foundation established under the Law on Endowments and Foundations, as a legal entity founded to manage the national internet domains. RNIDS is a professional, non-governmental, and non-profit foundation, established on 8 July 2006 by members of the local internet community who responded to a public call to systematically resolve the management of the former .yu domain.

On our website, you can find more information about the history of the development of the national internet domain registry over the past 20 years, as well as the challenges that were resolved through the establishment of RNIDS.

Who founded RNIDS?

The Agreement on the Founding of RNIDS was signed on 18th December 2006 by 17 companies and organisations who in doing so gained the status of founding member. Membership of RNIDS in the capacity of co-founder is open to all legal entities and sole traders in Serbia, and the organisation today numbers 60 co-founders, including numerous prominent organisations, companies and academic institutions. These include: the University of Belgrade Faculty of Electrical Engineering, the University of Belgrade Faculty of Law, the Svetozar Marković University Library, the Serbian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Telekom Serbia and the largest Serbian Internet providers and cable operators. A complete list of co-founders is available in the public register maintained by the Business Registers Agency, and on the page Co-founders and authorised representatives.

How do similar organisations function in other countries?

There are many other country Internet domain registries in Europe and the rest of the world which function in a similar way to RNIDS – for example the registries in Great Britain, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, etc. A good overview of the various models of relationship between states and country Internet registries can be found in the document of the Council of European National Top Level Domain Registries – CENTR. In most countries the model for the organisation which manages the national Internet domains is very similar to that of RNIDS, i.e. a non-governmental entity , which is in keeping with global Internet governance trends.

Who delegated the management of the national domains to RNIDS?

The task of administering the national Internet domains (the Latin .RS and the Cyrillic .СРБ) was delegated to RNIDS by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), which administers the global system of Internet addresses and numbers and which delegates all the other country and generic Internet domains worldwide.

What is the relationship between RNIDS and the Serbian state?

As can be seen from the history of our Foundation, various state institutions have taken a close interest in the establishment and operation of RNIDS from the very beginning. ICANN delegated the .RS domain (2007) and the .СРБ domain (2011) to RNIDS only once official endorsement had been received from the Government and the relevant ministries of the Republic of Serbia, as well as from relevant actors in the local Internet community. This is standard procedure when national domains are delegated by this organisation. Over time, RNIDS has established good partnerships not just with the relevant ministries but also with a range of other state institutions, such as, for example, the Interior Ministry’s Department for High-Tech Crime, the Public Prosecutor’s office, the Intellectual Property Office and the Office for Information Technologies and e-Government.
